Kogelberg Nature Reserve

Margaret and I decided to visit the Kogelberg Nature Reserve today in the hope of finding a frog that had been eluding us up until now, the Marsh Frog. This is a species restricted to the south-western Cape area which lives in shallow streams and marshy areas in montane fynbos. It is notoriously difficult to find and very few of our friends that are keen on frogs have actually seen it. We had heard of a recent record from the reserve, so thought we would try our luck although we did not hold out all that much hope at the outset. Although there were birds around us all the time that are typical of the montane fynbos habitat, none of them really present themselves for photos and, besides that, our concentration was elsewhere!! From the car park, we followed the trail along the Palmiet River and must have walked in the region of about 3km before turning around. We found several interesting things along the way. Southern Rock Agamas were hugely abundant and we also managed to dig out 2 snakes - a Common Brown Water Snake and a Spotted Skaapsteker. Both specimens were relatively small. But at the furtherest point of our walk, we struck gold! Marsh Frog... and not just one, but 5 individuals! Although it is not the nicest looking frog in the world, it certainly created a lot of excitement to finally catch up with this species. Now for the next target...
