I decided to do a bit of atlasing today. I started off in my home pentad (in order to improve my home pentad list which I started last week - see "my pentad" in the left margin) and then moved into the pentad just north of it. It was quite interesting to travel along some arbitrary back roads which I don't normally use in order to see what I could find. Most of the birds I recorded were pretty much expected, but in the northern pentad, I was surprised to locate a Black Sparrowhawk (have seen them in our area occasionally). A number of migrants are now back in full force and there were good numbers of Greater Striped and White-throated Swallows, African Reed Warblers and Yellow-billed Kites and I was also a little surprised to find a single Banded Martin in my home pentad.
