Cape pelagic trip

I was once again on board a ZEST for BIRDS pelagic trip as a guide today. Fortunately, there had been another respite in the recent bad weather and we were able to get out in relatively calm conditions although the south-easterly wind did pick during the course of the day. Highlights of the day included a small pod of Long-beaked Common Dolphins that came in to the boat just off of Cape Point and stayed with the boat for about 10 minutes and a juvenile Southern Royal Albatross feeding with a group of Shy Albatrosses giving a good comparison of its large size compared to the other mollymawks. We also saw our first Sabine's Gull for the season. Perhaps the most memorable part of the trip for most of the passengers was the locating of a single trawler that had a flock of literally thousands of seabirds in its wake. It was really quite a sight to get into the middle of this and have all of the birds wheeling around us at literally arms length!
