With the news breaking late yesterday of a Common Black-headed Gull located at Paarl Bird Sanctuary, John Graham and I decided to shoot out there this morning to see if we could locate the bird. Although I have seen a number of these in Southern Africa already, I had yet to get photos of one, so I was particularly keen to add it to my photographic lifelist. On arrival, there were already a number of people there watching the bird which was very confiding, so we were able to get some reasonable photos of it. After spending a bit of time with the bird, we moved off to see what else was around in the reserve. We found most of the regular species as well as a few that are quite uncommon like White-faced Duck, Hottentot Teal and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow. There was also a single male Wood Duck here, no doubt an escapee from someone's collection. We eventually returned to the gull to get even more photos, but by this time, the weather had closed in a bit, so the light was not that great. And then finally, it was off into town to find a place for lunch before heading back home.
