Margaret and I joined John and Greta Graham and Cliff and Suretha Dorse for a jaunt up to Eland's Bay this morning in the hope of locating a Lesser Moorhen that had been reported from there yesterday. We did locate the bird in question, but it turned out to be an aberrant Common Moorhen with more yellow than usual on the bill. We did however get a small consolation prize there in the form of a Baillon's Crake which was moving around quite a bit and also calling. This is a fairly rare bird in the Western Cape, but strangely enough it is the second one we have seen in the last few months! We then started to move about and bird the rest of the area when Cliff phoned me to say he thought he had a Baird's Sandpiper at Wadrift Salt Pan just north of the town. We immediately shot off there and located the bird on arrival and got cracking views of this mega rarity for Southern Africa. I need to check, but I think it is probably only about the 15th record ever! After enjoying the bird for quite some time, we headed off to get lunch and then made our way home.
