I was once again on board a ZEST for BIRDS pelagic trip as a guide today. Conditions were ideal with no wind and basically no swell. In fact, at one point on the trip, we actually switched the engines off for a while and just drifted along. Because of the lack of wind, bird activity was quieter with most of the birds just sitting on the water rather than flying around, but the highlight of the day was a single Slender-billed Prion that visited us for a short while. The rest of the birds were pretty much what one would expect at this time of the year, but we also had a pod of Long-beaked Common Dolphins as well as several Bryde's Whales and single Southern Right and Humpback Whales. The supporting cast also included a large Oceanic Sunfish next to the boat and an inquisitive Mako Shark that came up alongside the boat to investigate when we switched the engines off.
