Cape pelagic trip

Another day on board a ZEST for BIRDS pelagic trip as a guide today. Unfortunately, the conditions had deteriorated somewhat since yesterday and, because we were in a smaller boat, once we got to Cape Point after a rather bumpy ride, we were forced to stay close to the Point and not head out into the deep. We spent quite a bit of time around the feeding flocks in this area and managed to pick up a number of the regular pelagic species as well as a bonus in the form of 2 Flesh-footed Shearwaters. Although it was disappointing not to get out into the deep, the birding so close to shore was not bad and we were also fortunate to encounter quite a few whales as well as an Ocean Sunfish back in False Bay. Perhaps the weirdest sighting of the day was a single Pearl-breasted Swallow flying south of Cape Point out over the sea!
